Melissa M. Horne has practiced law since 1988, having previously been a law clerk in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court and then in private practice in Michigan for five years. Ms. Horne has extensive experience in complex litigation matters, having served as litigation counsel to the Receiver of American Universal Insurance Company in multi-district RICO litigation and as counsel to Rhode Island Housing Mortgage Finance Corporation in a landmark public nuisance case brought by the Rhode Island Attorney General against lead paint manufacturers. Her experience includes the successful representation of a wide range of businesses and individuals in litigation in state and federal trial and appellate courts, as well as in arbitration and mediation proceedings.

Ms. Horne received her law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1988. She also attended Boston University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1982. Ms. Horne served as Article and Book Review Editor of the University of Detroit Law Review. She also authored Casenote, 64 University of Detroit Law Review 301 (1986); Note, “Novel Scientific Evidence,” 65 University of Detroit Law Review 147 (1987); “ERISA Preemption of the Michigan Retirement Plan Exemption Statute,” 69 Michigan Bar Journal 1990.

Ms. Horne is a member of the Rhode Island and American Bar Associations, the State Bar of Michigan and serves on the Superior Court Bench/Bar Committee and the Federal Court Bench/Bar Committee of the Rhode Island Bar Association. Ms. Horne has practiced in the state, federal and bankruptcy courts in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Michigan, Arizona, South Carolina and Minnesota.

Ms. Horne concentrates her litigation practice in the area of business matters, and commercial law, insolvency law and matters involving trusts and estates.
